Electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining traction in India, driven by rising fuel costs and increased consumer interest in sustainable alternatives. Tata Motors, a leading name in the electric passenger vehicle market, has announced a game-changing commitment: all its new EVs will deliver a minimum range of 500 kilometers on a single charge.

Tata Motors, which commands a significant share of the EV market—selling one in every two EVs in the country—has made strides in addressing range concerns. Managing Director Shailesh Chandra confirmed the company’s efforts, citing the launch of the updated Nexon EV as a prime example.

Extended Range Models

  • The Nexon EV, previously offering a range of 325 kilometers, now boasts a battery capacity of 45 kWh and a range of 489 kilometers.
  • The upcoming Curvv EV will debut with a range of 500 kilometers, signaling the company’s focus on range enhancement.

Decline in Battery Costs: A Key Enabler

This significant improvement has been made possible by the decline in global battery cell prices, a critical cost component of EVs. Chandra explained that battery costs, which stood at $220–230 per kWh when Tata first entered the EV market, have now dropped by 50–60%, enabling the company to incorporate higher-capacity batteries without raising costs.

Balancing Progress with Customer Sentiment

While the move to increase range and enhance convenience is a positive step, Chandra acknowledged a potential downside. “This may disappoint our early customers,” he admitted. Despite this, Tata Motors is prioritizing innovation and customer satisfaction, focusing on delivering greater value to its future EV buyers.

With these advancements, Tata Motors is positioning itself as a key player in India’s rapidly evolving EV landscape, setting new benchmarks for range and affordability in electric mobility.
