The Biden administration has imposed sanctions on two entities from Russia and Iran for allegedly meddling in the U.S. election through artificial intelligence-driven misinformation campaigns. This move comes amid heightened concerns over foreign interference in democratic processes.
The U.S. Treasury announced that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its subsidiary, along with Russia’s Military Intelligence Agency (GRU), were involved in spreading false and misleading information to influence American voters. Treasury Secretary Bradley Smith said these actions were deliberate attempts to manipulate the electoral process.
Similarly, Iran’s Cognitive Design Production Center reportedly leveraged AI-driven tactics to influence voter behavior, further exacerbating tensions between Washington and Tehran.
As the 2024 presidential election looms, the U.S. government is doubling down on efforts to prevent foreign interference, ensuring that emerging technologies like AI are not weaponized against democracy.
