Xi Jinping Reiterates: No Force Can Stop Taiwan’s Unification with China

Beijing: Amid escalating tensions between China and Taiwan, Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed his commitment to Taiwan’s unification with mainland China during his New Year’s address. Xi declared that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China and that no external force can halt its eventual reunification.

This bold statement comes against the backdrop of increasing friction between China and the United States, with Washington supporting Taiwan’s independence and challenging China’s maritime claims in the South China Sea. The U.S. has also pledged to assist Taiwan militarily in the event of an attack by China, further straining bilateral relations with Beijing.

Taiwan as a Family Tied to China
In his address, Xi emphasized that “Taiwan and China are one family,” asserting that the ties between the two cannot be severed. He portrayed unification as inevitable, framing it as a matter of historical and familial necessity.

Rising Tensions in the Region
China’s aggressive stance toward Taiwan has included frequent incursions by Chinese military aircraft into Taiwan’s airspace and increased naval activity around the island. These maneuvers are widely seen as part of Beijing’s broader strategy to intimidate Taiwan and assert its dominance in the region.

Taiwan, on the other hand, remains resolute in maintaining its independence, with strong support from the U.S. and other allies. The U.S. has increased arms sales to Taiwan and conducted naval exercises in the Taiwan Strait to counter China’s assertiveness.

A Question of Time?
Xi Jinping’s latest remarks underscore Beijing’s determination to achieve unification, but Taiwan’s leadership has shown no signs of backing down. The situation remains a volatile flashpoint in global geopolitics, with analysts warning that any misstep could lead to a major conflict involving global powers.

For now, the standoff continues, with Taiwan strengthening its defenses and the international community closely monitoring China’s next moves. As Xi said, the question is no longer “if” but “when” Taiwan will reunify with China—a prospect that raises both hope and alarm in equal measure.
