Beijing: Amid escalating tensions between China and Taiwan, Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed his commitment to Taiwan’s unification with mainland China during his New Year’s address. Xi declared that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China and that no external force can halt its eventual reunification.
This bold statement comes against the backdrop of increasing friction between China and the United States, with Washington supporting Taiwan’s independence and challenging China’s maritime claims in the South China Sea. The U.S. has also pledged to assist Taiwan militarily in the event of an attack by China, further straining bilateral relations with Beijing.
Taiwan, on the other hand, remains resolute in maintaining its independence, with strong support from the U.S. and other allies. The U.S. has increased arms sales to Taiwan and conducted naval exercises in the Taiwan Strait to counter China’s assertiveness.
For now, the standoff continues, with Taiwan strengthening its defenses and the international community closely monitoring China’s next moves. As Xi said, the question is no longer “if” but “when” Taiwan will reunify with China—a prospect that raises both hope and alarm in equal measure.
