Washington: A group of six US Congressmen has formally reached out to newly appointed Attorney General Pamela Bondi, questioning the US Department of Justice (DOJ) over its indictment of the Adani Group in an alleged bribery case. The lawmakers argue that such actions could strain US-India relations, a partnership critical to economic and geopolitical interests.

Concerns Over DOJ’s Decision

In a letter dated February 10, Congressmen Lance Gooden, Pat Fallon, Mike Haridopolos, Brandon Gill, William R. Timmons, and Brian Babin expressed concerns over the DOJ’s decision to pursue legal action against Adani Group executives. The indictment alleges that the Indian conglomerate was involved in a $250 million bribery scheme to secure favorable solar power contracts in India.

Prosecutors claim that the group concealed this information from US banks and investors while raising billions for the project. Under US law, foreign corruption cases can be pursued if they involve American markets or investors. However, Adani Group has denied all allegations, maintaining that the case lacks merit.

Allegations of Political Bias and Diplomatic Fallout

The Congressmen argue that the DOJ’s actions appear to be selectively motivated and lack substantial US interests at stake. They believe that rather than deferring the case to Indian authorities—where the alleged wrongdoing occurred—the DOJ pushed forward with charges, risking unnecessary diplomatic strain.

“Instead of allowing Indian agencies to handle the matter, the DOJ under the Biden administration moved ahead with an indictment that does little to protect American interests but jeopardizes a key alliance,” the letter states.

Impact on US-India Relations and Economic Ties

India and the United States share a deep economic and strategic partnership, which has grown significantly over the years. The Congressmen warn that such legal actions could undermine this relationship, particularly as Donald Trump prepares for a potential return to the White House.

They emphasize that unnecessary legal pursuits against global investors, who contribute significantly to the US economy and job market, could discourage future investments.

“Adani Group and other Indian investors have injected billions into the US economy, creating thousands of jobs. Unfounded allegations can deter further economic cooperation at a time when strengthening global alliances is crucial,” the letter highlights.

Geopolitical Risks and China’s Advantage

Beyond economic concerns, the lawmakers also warn of potential geopolitical consequences. India is a vital ally in the Asia-Pacific region, playing a key role in countering China’s growing influence. They argue that politically motivated legal actions could strain US-India ties, ultimately benefiting China and its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)—a global infrastructure strategy that seeks to expand Beijing’s economic dominance.

“A fallout in relations with India would not only weaken a key strategic partnership but hand China a major advantage in its efforts to undermine US economic power,” the letter warns.

Call for Investigation into DOJ’s Conduct

The Congressmen are urging Attorney General Bondi to review the DOJ’s decision-making process and provide transparency into what they describe as “reckless legal pursuits”. They have requested access to all records related to the case to determine whether external influences played a role in the indictment.

“We request a thorough investigation into the DOJ’s conduct, ensuring that political motivations are not jeopardizing critical international relationships,” the lawmakers concluded.

With US-India ties at a pivotal juncture, the outcome of this case could have far-reaching implications on economic, diplomatic, and strategic fronts.
