Tata Steel‘s Dutch unit is facing a legal challenge worth around $1.6 billion from a local environmental group. The lawsuit was filed in a Dutch court by Stichting Frisse Wind, which claims that emissions from Tata Steel’s IJmuiden plant have caused health issues and environmental harm. The case was officially served on December 19, 2025, under a Dutch law that allows for group claims.
The group says it’s representing residents near Tata Steel’s Velsen-Noord plant and is seeking compensation for health problems and reduced quality of life. They also argue that home prices in the area are lower than in similar places. However, Tata Steel has not seen any proof to back these claims and says they are not valid.
Tata Steel shares dropped slightly on Friday, closing at Rs 168.55, a decrease of about 0.89%.This is not the first time the company has been accused of environmental damage. In August 2023, the same NGO already held Tata Steel responsible for emissions affecting nearby areas.
The company is ready to defend itself and believes the case has big hurdles to overcome.
It has already found strong reasons to challenge the claims. Under the WAMCA process, the case will go through two stages—admissibility and merits—each taking two to three years. Discussions about compensation are not expected soon.
Tata Steel also mentioned its efforts to improve the environment and community health around the IJmuiden plant.
It has been working on the Roadmap+ programme and continues to make progress with its Green Steel Plan, which is part of a deal with the Dutch government to cut emissions, reduce noise, and lower other harmful effects.
