Defending champions and co-hosts India have officially announced their squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, scheduled to begin on February 7. The Indian team will enter the global tournament with the aim of creating history by becoming the first nation to win back-to-back T20 World Cup titles and also targeting a record third championship overall.
Suryakumar Yadav to Lead India in T20 World Cup 2026
In a significant leadership move, Suryakumar Yadav has been appointed captain of the Indian side. This will mark his first-ever ICC tournament as India’s captain, highlighting the selectors’ faith in his aggressive batting style and calm leadership approach in the shortest format.
All-rounder Axar Patel has been named vice-captain, stepping into the role following the absence of Shubman Gill, who has been left out of the squad. Gill’s omission has emerged as one of the biggest talking points after the squad announcement, especially given his strong performances across formats in recent seasons.
Balanced Squad with Youth and Experience
India’s squad features a strong blend of experienced campaigners and young talent. Power-hitters like Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, and Shivam Dube provide depth in the batting lineup, while wicketkeepers Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan offer flexibility and explosive options at the top and middle order.
The all-round department is strengthened by Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar, giving India multiple bowling and batting combinations depending on match conditions.
Strong Bowling Attack
India’s bowling unit looks formidable, led by pace spearheads Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh, with young fast bowler Harshit Rana adding fresh pace. The spin department includes experienced campaigners Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakaravarthy, both known for their wicket-taking abilities in T20 cricket.
