Congress demands Amit Shah’s apology for insulting Babasaheb Ambedkar

The Congress on 17 December 2024 alleged that Home Minister Amit Shah’s comments in the Rajya Sabha during  the Constitution debate show that  BJP and  RSS leaders have “great hatred” towards BR. Ambedkar and demanded an apology. Former Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that those who believe in Manusmriti will definitely come into conflict with Ambedkar.

Congress Public Relations Secretary Jairam Ramesh shared a video clip of Shah’s speech in the Upper House on X. “Abhi ek fashion ho gaya hai – Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar. Itna naam agar bhagwan ka lete to saat janmon tak swarg mil jata (It is now fashionable to say Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar).” “If they had uttered the name of God many times, they would have got a place in heaven,” Shah said, taking a swipe at the opposition.

Shah said the BJP was happy that the Congress had taken up Ambedkar’s name, but the party should also discuss its true feelings towards him. He pointed out that Ambedkar had to resign from the first cabinet as he did not agree with the policies of the then Congress government, including Article 370. Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge slammed Shah, saying the home minister’s “insult” towards Babasaheb “proved once again  that the BJP-RSS was against the tricolour and its forefathers were against  the Ashok Chakra and the people of the Sangh Parivar from the very beginning.” “We wanted to implement Manusmriti on Manusmriti day and not the Indian Constitution.” “Dr Babasaheb, Ambedkar ji would not have allowed this to happen and that is why there is so much hatred against him,” Kharge said. “Ministers in the Modi government should realise that for millions of people like me, Babasaheb Ambedkar is not a god… he is and will always be the saviour of Dalits, tribals, lower classes, minorities and the poor,” Kharge said in Hindi. “Amit Shah has said something very hateful. This shows that the BJP and RSS leaders hate Baba Saheb Ambedkar very much.” “The hatred is so great that  even  his name offends them. These are the same people whose ancestors burned effigies of Baba Saheb and themselves spoke about amending the constitution promulgated by Baba Saheb,” the Congress leader said. “People have been taught  a lesson and now they are resentful towards people who take the name of Baba Saheb,” he said.

“Shameful! Amit Shah should apologise to the country for this,”  Ramesh asserted. Congress general secretary and responsible body K.C. Venugopal also slammed Shah over his comments. “Sir Amit Shah, for those who do not know, Dr Babasaheb, Bhimrao Ambedkar is synonymous with God and the Constitution he wrote is a holy book for millions of people across the world. How can you speak with such disdain about Dr. Ambedkar?” he said. “The BJP’s antipathy towards Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar has always been known and the Home Minister’s pathetic remarks in the Rajya Sabha today once again confirmed how much she loves Dr. Ambedkar. Venugopal claimed in a post on X that she “hates and hates Ambedkar”. “The followers of Manusmriti will always despise

Ambedkar for rejecting the caste-oriented RSS and its horrible ideas of Manusmriti,” he said. “Those who were talking about changing the constitution if they get more than 400 seats are now openly mocking our country’s reverence for Dr. Ambedkar,”  Venugopal said. “Those who claimed to bow down to him could not hide their true feelings for long. This dangerous remark by the Bharatiya Janata Party leadership shows that they have lost the right to speak about Ambedkar ever again,” he said.

The home minister attacked the Congress for treating the constitution like a clan’s “private fief” and “cheating” the Congress.

At the end of a two-day debate on “75 years of glorious journey of the Indian Constitution”, Shah criticised the Congress’s appeasement policy. He alleged that the party wants to go beyond the 50 percent quota of seats given to Muslims. He also alleged that the party has never worked for the welfare of the lower classes and questioned the Congress whether it would support a Personal Status Act for Muslims. Shah stressed that the BJP has already introduced a Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand and will introduce it in all states.
