Islamabad, April 29, 2025 – Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has reacted strongly to the recent Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, calling the loss of life “deeply disturbing” and issuing a stern warning to India over its response.
In a statement shared from his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Khan extended his condolences to the victims of the attack, which claimed 26 lives. “The loss of human life in Pahalgam is deeply tragic. I offer my heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families,” he said.
Imran Khan Warns India Over Blame Game
Khan criticized what he called India’s “habitual response” of blaming Pakistan without evidence. Drawing parallels with the 2019 Pulwama attack, he said, “As predicted in 2019, the same blame game is unfolding. Instead of investigating or introspection, Modi Sarkar is once again blaming Pakistan without proof.”
Referring to India as a “nation of 1.5 billion,” the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader urged restraint, noting the sensitive geopolitical nature of the Kashmir region, which he termed a “nuclear flashpoint.” He added, “Peace has always been Pakistan’s priority, but it should not be mistaken for weakness.”
Nuclear Warning and Regional Stability
Khan, who has been imprisoned since August 2023 over multiple charges, invoked the 2019 Balakot episode, saying his then-government had given a “befitting response” to Indian aggression. “Pakistan has all the capabilities to defend itself against any misadventure,” he said.
He reiterated his party’s long-standing support for the Kashmiri right to self-determination as guaranteed by UN resolutions, and slammed India’s abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, calling it a key driver behind unrest in the region.
Criticism of Pakistan’s Political Leadership
Khan did not spare Pakistan’s ruling elite either. He criticized former Prime Ministers Nawaz Sharif and Asif Zardari, calling them “self-serving figures” who remain silent in the face of foreign aggression due to their alleged overseas financial interests.
“It’s naive to expect any strong stance from those whose wealth lies abroad,” he stated, claiming they fear retaliation from Indian lobbies that might freeze their assets.
Khan warned that Pakistan’s focus on political victimization and internal divisions is weakening the country’s ability to counter external threats. “To win against any external enemy, the nation must be united,” he emphasized.
Tensions Soar After Pahalgam Attack
Khan’s statement comes amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam attack. Pakistani Information Minister Attaullah Tarar claimed that India might launch a military strike within 24 to 36 hours, calling it a response based on a “false flag operation.”
Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reportedly held a closed-door meeting with top defense officials and has given the military “complete operational freedom” to respond as needed.
Relations between the two nuclear-armed neighbors remain fragile, with Kashmir continuing to be the epicenter of geopolitical strife. As accusations and warnings mount on both sides, the risk of escalation remains dangerously high.
