Saada, Yemen — April 28, 2025: US Airstrike struck a migrant detention center in Saada, Yemen, killing at least 68 people and injuring dozens more, according to Huthi-controlled media. The deadly incident comes amid intensified US military operations against Huthi rebels, who have been disrupting global shipping routes in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
Tragedy at Migrant Center
Local reports, including harrowing footage from Al-Masirah TV, show bodies buried under rubble as rescue teams desperately searched for survivors. Authorities say the center housed 115 African migrants, many seeking a better life in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations after fleeing violence and poverty in East Africa.
At least 47 migrants were critically wounded, raising fears that the death toll could rise further.
Background: Rising Tensions Between US and Huthi Rebels
The airstrike is part of “Operation Rough Rider,” a US-led military campaign launched in mid-March 2025. According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), over 800 Huthi targets—including missile depots, command centers, and drone facilities—have been hit since operations began.
Despite the heavy bombardment, Huthi forces continue to attack international shipping lanes, posing a threat to vital trade routes, particularly through the Suez Canal. Huthi leaders claim their actions are in solidarity with Palestinians, following Israel’s military actions in Gaza.
US officials state that their efforts have reduced Huthi drone attacks by 55% and ballistic missile launches by 69%. However, they acknowledge that the Iranian-backed Huthis remain a significant threat in the region.
“We will continue to increase pressure on the Huthis until freedom of navigation is fully restored,” said a CENTCOM spokesperson.
Continued Strikes on Sanaa Deepen the Crisis
Meanwhile, the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, has also suffered from US airstrikes. Over the weekend, at least eight people were reported killed and several others wounded when residential areas were hit. Shocking images from the scene show destroyed homes, charred vehicles, and desperate survivors searching through the ruins.
Humanitarian Concerns Grow
The escalating conflict has worsened Yemen’s humanitarian crisis, already one of the world’s worst. Vulnerable migrants, trapped between the warring sides, bear the heaviest burden. International organizations have condemned the rising civilian casualties and called for urgent action to protect non-combatants.
As foreign involvement in the Yemen conflict deepens, hopes for a peaceful resolution remain distant, with civilians—especially migrants—paying the ultimate price.
