Pakistan Test-Fires Second Missile Amid Rising India-Pakistan Tensions After Pahalgam Attack
Amid growing regional tensions, Pakistan on Monday conducted a successful test of its domestically developed surface-to-surface missile Fatah, capable of striking targets up to 120 kilometres away. The missile was tested as part of a large-scale military drill named Exercise INDUS (Ex INDUS), according to a statement by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
“The flight test was aimed at validating the design and performance features of the weapon system,” said ISPR. The Fatah missile is a key part of Pakistan’s tactical strike capability.
Top military officials, scientists, and engineers from Pakistan’s strategic organizations were present to witness the launch, signalling the importance of this demonstration.
This marks Pakistan’s second missile test in 48 hours, following the training launch of the Abdali missile system on Saturday.
The back-to-back missile launches come in the aftermath of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which left 26 civilians dead and significantly escalated tensions between India and Pakistan — two nuclear-armed neighbours.
In response to the terror attack, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a strong warning, stating that those behind the incident will face consequences. During a high-level meeting with defence leaders on April 29, Modi granted the Indian armed forces “complete operational freedom” to decide on the time, place, and method of response.
The rapid missile launches by Pakistan, coupled with strong statements from Indian leadership, have intensified concerns of a possible escalation between the two countries.
