Mumbai bus strike

Mumbai, June 19, 2026: An indefinite strike by BEST (Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport) employees has commenced today in Mumbai, the country’s financial capital. The strike has directly impacted the city’s bus services, causing immense hardship for lakhs of daily commuters. Employees opted for this strike after talks between employee unions and the administration failed to yield a consensus.

According to reports, a joint front of several employee unions has launched this agitation over long-pending demands. Employees state that no concrete decisions have been taken so far regarding issues such as wages, service conditions, recruitment for vacant posts, and outstanding payments for retired staff. Consequently, they announced an indefinite strike.

Mumbai’s BEST bus service is a primary mode of transport for lakhs of people daily. On the very first day of the strike, a reduced number of buses were seen on many routes, while services on some routes were completely disrupted. Office-goers, students, and other commuters had to rely on alternative modes of transport during the morning rush. Increased pressure was observed on taxis, auto-rickshaws, and local trains.

The BEST administration has stated that it is making alternative arrangements to minimize inconvenience to passengers. Additional buses have been deployed in some areas, and efforts are underway to maintain essential services. However, there is currently no clear information regarding how long the strike will continue.

Key demands of the employee unions include increased financial assistance for BEST, recruitment for vacant posts, reforms in the contract system, settlement of pending dues for retired employees, and strengthening the bus fleet. The unions have warned that the agitation could be prolonged if their demands are not seriously considered.

Commuters across various parts of the city have expressed concern over the disruption of bus services. Those most affected are individuals who rely on BEST buses for affordable daily commuting. Experts believe that if a solution is not found soon, it could have a significant impact on Mumbai’s public transport system.

For now, all eyes are on the upcoming talks between the administration and the employees’ unions. If both parties reach an agreement, bus services could soon return to normal. Until then, Mumbaikars may have to rely on alternative modes of transport.
