Bengaluru, April 25, 2025 — India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished scientists and education reformers, Dr. K Kasturirangan, who passed away on Friday at the age of 84. A former ISRO Chairman and the guiding force behind India’s National Education Policy (NEP), Dr. Kasturirangan breathed his last at his residence in Bengaluru, officials confirmed.
His body will be kept at the Raman Research Institute (RRI) on April 27 to allow admirers, colleagues, and members of the scientific and academic communities to pay their final respects.
A Legacy in Space and Science
Dr. Kasturirangan was best known for his pivotal role in shaping India’s space program. Serving as Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) from 1994 to 2003, he oversaw several key space missions and advancements in satellite technology. His tenure marked the development of India’s remote sensing capabilities and laid the foundation for more ambitious projects like Chandrayaan and Mars Orbiter Mission.
He was instrumental in pushing forward India’s space-based applications in meteorology, telecommunication, and natural resource management, enhancing the country’s self-reliance in satellite technology.
Architect of the New National Education Policy (NEP)
After his ISRO tenure, Dr. Kasturirangan turned his focus to education. He chaired the drafting committee of the NEP 2020, India’s most comprehensive and forward-looking education reform since 1986. The policy emphasizes holistic, multi-disciplinary education, and aims to make India a global knowledge superpower by promoting critical thinking, vocational training, and digital learning.
The policy is seen as a transformative step toward redefining the Indian education system, and Kasturirangan’s vision and leadership were central to its formation.
Academic and Government Contributions
Dr. Kasturirangan held numerous prestigious roles during his lifetime. He served as Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Chairman of the Karnataka Knowledge Commission, playing a vital role in promoting knowledge-based governance in the state.
He was also a Rajya Sabha member from 2003 to 2009 and contributed significantly to policy making in science, education, and technology. Additionally, he was a member of the erstwhile Planning Commission of India, shaping strategies for national development.
He also directed the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) in Bengaluru from 2004 to 2009, fostering interdisciplinary research and policy studies.
A Life Dedicated to Nation-Building
Dr. Kasturirangan’s contributions earned him numerous honors, including the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan, among India’s highest civilian awards. His legacy spans across space science, education, policy-making, and institution building.
India has lost a true visionary whose work has impacted generations and will continue to shape the nation’s future.
